Bal Kaur Lee - Hairdresser
When Tim first came back to my hometown Llandeilo in South Wales, I took him to meet my grandparents to see if he 'cut the mustard'.
As soon as he walked in, Nan announced that the picture I didn’t want him to see was ‘the one behind the door by the clock’, the one with the 'interesting' haircut. Curly hair like mine wasn’t known and understood in the small Welsh farming community I grew up in in the 80s and I never knew what I would come out with. Thanks Nan.
So, when Bal entered the scene around 16 years ago, I never looked back. I’d finally found someone who really understood curly hair.
Your relationship with your hairdresser is an important one. Not only can your self-esteem hang on a good cut or blow dry, but your hairdresser is often your confidant, your yellow pages, your sounding board, and for some, your only real conversation with another human that day, or even, week.
They turn up day after day, cutting and conversing, highlighting and humouring, styling and supporting. Always on their feet.
Bal has cut, styled and coloured my hair for over 16 years now and I consider her a friend. Huw and Gryff also do martial arts with her daughter Avani who they love to grapple with (I’m starting to understand the lingo slowly). She styles all hair types but has a particular specialism in curls (having beautiful curls herself) and she cuts my hair, my sisters, my mother-in-law, sister-in-law and nieces’ hair and best never retire!
Bal’s slipper / shoe of choice is our Medi Sandal in Leopard. I could easily have picked this out for her – full of flare, on trend and toes out for temperature regulation...
